Photobooth Press Photo – 12 January 1986
This is an old press photo from 1986, showing one of the many photobooths that used to exist in department stores across the USA. This one was in the J.J. Newberry Co’s store in Portland, Oregon.
I have an ambition to find a strip of these three girls, not necessarily to own, but to add to this blog and the story in this photo. Their names are Julie Hensel of Gresham, now 44 years old, and Tiffany Mohr, now 43 and Rachele Johnson, now 44. Both Tiffany and Rachele were from Portland.
Sadly the J.J. Newberry Company is now defunct. Assuming this was their only store in Portland, the one that housed this booth appears to have been the last of their chain to remain open. It closed in 2001.
I hope by adding the names of these girls in the text and the tags, that they, or someone they know will stumble upon this post. Maybe they still have the photobooth strips they took on this day and will be willing to share them here?
Thank you to everyone for all their comments and Easter wishes. I hope I can get some replies done very soon. In the meantime I am enjoying browsing your posts.

I went to college in Portland, and I recall going to Newberry’s a number of times. It was like Woolworth’s. I miss the old Portland before it became taken over by techies and hipsters.

I believe there was a Newberry’s store both in downtowm Portland, and at Lloyd Center, a mall built in the late 1950s, one of the first shopping malls. The downtown store was there from 1927 to 1996, and Lloyd Center was evidently the very last one, closing in 2001.

I am definitely rooting for you to find these girls! That would be amazing! I hope an actual photo was taken and it wasn’t just a staged thing for the promo shot….!

I really hope you hear from either the “girls” now women themselves or someone who knows them. You blog would be a great reality TV show.

Great publicity shot, which, with a few tweaks might make a convincing Robert Frank. Love that italic font used for “Photographs.” Vintage and otherwise-forgotten fonts could make for a fine topic for another blog, especially if it was as good as yours!

What a great photo for you to have, Katherine. I remember the store, I lived in Portland in 1995 for 9 months and it was in the Lloyd Center. I assume you have looked on facebook for the girls. It would be fun to find the photo as it appeared in the paper. The Oregonian is the Portland paper. Gresham is a suburb of Portland.
