Medieval Maiden Style
I was attracted to this photo as there is a medieval princess look to this young woman’s hat. I’m very fond of portrait paintings from that era. The cone shaped hennin of the period, says royalty above all else and the demure expression on her very attractive face, gives her a regal bearing.
Closer inspection of the image suggests she is wearing a marching girl uniform of some sort, rather than a carnival or party costume. The insignia on the hat certainly suggests she is a member of an organisation or team of some sort.
This is an undated photobooth photo from France. It dates to around the 1940s. Perhaps, if you are more familiar with French culture than I, you might recognise this outfit? Let me know in the comments, if you do.
I don’t have any insight into the context for the photo, I’m afraid, except to say that what she’s wearing looks like a band uniform to me as well. I was struck by her demure expression.
I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but I left you a note on Esther’s page while you were on hiatus.

No, I didn’t Liz but I stumbled across your wonderful story about her while exploring what I had missed on your blog. I’ve left you a few comments there. 😃

It occurred to me yesterday watching a film about Welsh costume that it could be Brittany?

Interesting. The traditional costume of Brittany has wonderful head gear from memory, so it is a possibility that translated into some, more contemporary hats. I will see what I can find. Thanks Derrick!

I’m so glad you are blogging again! I can’t help with what she’s wearing either. I will say that both my kids were in band in high school and I helped with the marching band uniforms. I never saw a hat like the one she’s wearing. Have you checked any band uniform catalogs online?

I didn’t know those catalogues existed. I will look to see if there are French band uniforms. . .

I used them when I helped redesign the band uniforms at my kids’ high school! I was amazed at how many styles there are for band uniforms, many of which hark back to the past.

You wouldn’t have a link handy, that you could forward? Thanks in advance! I tried searching in French and English but only came up with a few random images.

Perhaps she is a flag bearer? The strap could be one that has a place to hold the pole carrying the flag. She is a lovely woman, and I can just picture you standing outside the booth telling her the camera is in front of her and to turn and sit up straight.

Yep, I’m a bossy boots when directing a photobooth shoot!
I’ve just been trying to find a similar uniform online. Not having much luck. I should do an image search but need to figure out how. . .

Maid Marianne – part of Robin Hood’s Merry Marching Band ? 🤔
Glad to see you blogging again. 🙂

Funnily enough, I’ve just been reading a bit about the origins of Rob’s story via curiosity about Piers Plowman, where the legend gets a mention. Thanks Joseph.

Probably a marching band. Maybe a musician or a baton swirler. The “Bonnet” has a grenade insignia. But is quite longer than usual. It makes me think of a region or two, but nothing precise.

I agree. Marching band. I’ve some more information about the cap, so will do an update soon, I hope. 🤞🏼

I have them out! I’m still trying to get to photos people sent me years and years ago, but perhaps I will skip over those and do one of yours next?
