Mephisto – “The Beard of Evil”
The names we call the Devil are numerous. He may be referred to by monikers such as Lucifer, Satan, the Prince of Darkness or Beelzebub. My personal favourite is Mephistopheles.
Mephistopheles was originally a demon that featured in German folklore and in the literary legend of Doctor Faustus, where he was acting as the devil’s henchman. In the legend, Faust makes a deal with the devil for the price of his soul.
This very dapper gentleman is smooth and handsome enough for me to want to sit down with him for a chat, yet he has a touch of the devil in his look, don’t you think? Of course part of the satan’s cunning is his allure, yes? He certainly follows the TV villain/comic book trope of The Beard of Evil – a small, well-groomed follicular, facial flourish.
This two photo strip was another generous gift from Brian from Equinoxio blog. Thanks again, Brian!
Hi Katherine, so good to see you here, I hope your well. I do see that ‘look’ you mention too. Perhaps a wolf in sheep’s clothing?

Hi, Kate! So good to see you. I’d never heard of the Beard of Evil as a trope–but of course it is! In my world, the goatee also serves as The Beard of the Pretentious Professor.

Interesting how everyone judges this man’s beard. To me his hooded eyes are more significant. However if you look carefully and imagine him breaking into a smile he would be quite avuncular. Hmmm….. perhaps he’s a sheep in wolfs clothing.

Love your interpretation, Tony! (Avuncular is one of my favourite words.)

Wow, that is a good one. Almost scary, as you allude, when you look at the subtle differences in the two photos from top to bottom. Would that we could see the other two photos. I’m thinking these were the top two, maybe by the fourth we would see horns. Nice post, Katherine.

There are no links to the images, so I can’t see them, but I did look at your videos on YouTube. It is such a shame that you are not making work more often!

I think you might be right about that ‘touch of the devil’!!! 😉 He reminds me of two actors who played ‘The Master’ in Doctor Who back in the 70s and 80s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Master_(Doctor_Who) If look at the pictures (top right) of this Wiki article, you will see what I mean. Point at the pictures and the actors names come up… Rodger Delgado and Anthony Ainley were the two I’m thinking of… they have a similar beard and moustache. The Master is one of the most human looking and devious reoccurring villains in Doctor Who. Could he be the very first incarnation of The Master that nobody knew about?! The fans would love it!!

Thanks for your wonderful comment! I remember the early Masters from watching on Australian TV in the 70s. I agree he could be an early incarnation of that character and I love that idea!!
