1 April 2001, Chadstone, Melbourne

A second April Fool’s Day strip but now with the addition of my sister Sue.

This strip of photos comes from my series Photobooth 41 Year Project. The project is now getting close to entering its 44th year. I’d like to change the name  to reflect this but if I do, none of my links or categories will work. It is a nightmare to go through every post, looking for broken links and to fix them!

With my gorgeous nephew, Cal. This was taken at Chadstone Shopping Centre, a favourite place for my sister to shop, (and shop and shop . . .), when she is in Melbourne. I never go there unless she is visiting from Dublin. Cal is now 16 and is subjected to a photobooth sitting every time he visits. His mum often sends me booth photos for my birthday and Xmas presents, too.

Me with my travelling companion and friend, Helen. This was taken in my favourite photobooth at Luna Park in Melbourne. Helen was visiting from the UK.

25 November 2000, Luna Park, Melbourne

Me and an old school friend, Lisa in a favourite photobooth at Luna Park.

I still love the old black and white booth photos more than any other type. Unfortunately I am afraid that, like this booth and friendship, they will be gone soon.

Below and from the same year, I kept a travelcard celebrating the facade of Luna Park.

22 September 2000, Melbourne, Victoria

Another of my guide dog puppies, Vinson was adored by all children, but especially by two, Giosue and Francesco. Their adoration of this dog made giving him up more difficult than usual. Telling them that he would no longer be with me when they came to visit, was heart-breaking, such was their devastation at the news.

Vinson graduated and became a fully fledged guide dog. He was sent to Japan where he had to relearn all his commands in Japanese. Unfortunately he was unable to deal with the noise and frantic pace of life in Tokyo, so he was retired. He was adopted by a family from a smaller city, where, I hope, he lived very happily.

8 July 2000, Melbourne, Victoria

This is Grant and I in a rare Polaroid photobooth photo. He was one of my ‘respite care’ guide dog puppies. Being a black dog on a dark background, he isn’t too easy to see, but he was a very handsome boy.

Due to my failing health and the commitments of my business, I was no longer able to raise pups full-time. I took in trainees who had been injured, had had an operation or suffered from some other issue that meant they needed time to rest. Hopefully they would then be fit enough to return to their training.

The day after this photo was taken Grant was ‘decommissioned’ by Guide Dogs Victoria due to an unresolved issue which precluded him from completing his training. I believe he went back to his original puppy raising family.

I have no recollection of the location of this booth, not having made a note of it at the time. However, I suspect it was at Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne. There were four photos in the original set.

17 June 2000, Southland Shopping Centre, Cheltenham, Victoria

One day in June, 2000, my darling friend and virtual sister Petrina and I went on a shopping expedition to get some cosmetic luxuries.  With those came a free make-up session at Chanel. I don’t think either of us, before or since, have been plastered with quite as much make-up as we were that day. It was a fun thing to do together and had to be commemorated with some photobooth photos, of course!

28 February 2000, Melbourne Central Station, Melbourne

One of the best aspects of having been a Guide Dog of Victoria puppy raiser was the ability to go anywhere with your dog, including restaurants, shops, the cinema and all public places animals would not normally be allowed.

I took this photo strip on the first day that my first graduate, Charlie, came to Melbourne University with me. I was studying for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education.

The Guide Dog Association is always very appreciative of the work volunteers do for them. Below are just two of the certificates they gave me during the three years I was involved with them.

When Charlie graduated, I was given a mounted portrait of him in his official working gear. I took it out some time ago to show a friend, as I am very proud of having been involved in his success, but didn’t put it back where it was supposed to be and thus was unable to find it to show you for this post. It is a beautiful professional photo and Charlie looked very proud of himself, I can tell you.

I have absolutely no memory whatsoever of the film The Insider. The IMDb synopsis reads “A research chemist comes under personal and professional attack when he decides to appear in a “60 Minutes” expose on Big Tobacco.”

The film stars Russell CroweAl Pacino and Christopher Plummer.

7 January 2000, Charlottenburg Bahnhof, Berlin

Berlin-Charlottenburg is the railway station for the Charlottenburg district of Berlin. I was there for the Year 2000 celebrations. This photo was taken in the same booth as the photo from the previous post.
